Chapter Twelve
My first week at my new job—also known as “planning week”—went faster than I could’ve imagined. I was the teaching assistant for the threes-and-fours class under Alison Grainger, a petite brunette whom I judged to be in her mid-thirties. She had a relaxed manner that didn’t completely hide the air of a seasoned teacher, and I liked her instantly. She didn’t treat me like I was an underling and she was the boss, like I’d experienced during my internships, and she made sure to include me in the curriculum planning.
The first day of school with students was always chaotic, but even more so with preschool, because a lot of these parents were dropping their kids off at school for the first time ever—and in some cases, dropping their kids off anywhere for the first time ever—so there was a bit of a learning curve. The parking lot was nearly gridlocked, and the halls were stuffed full of children, parents, and in some cases even grandparents.
The whole aura inside the school bristled with nervous excitement. I sat in one of the miniature chairs at one of the miniature tables, checking off students on the attendance list as Alison greeted them. Since I was new, I had no idea who anyone was. Some of the children ran right to the toys that were carefully arranged in stations according to which type of sensory or cognitive development they stimulated, while others clung to their parents and cried. The names of this generation of children were…inventive, to say the least. And that was a big deal, coming from someone with a brother named River.
A boy named Arrow whined as his mother tried to peel his arms from their octopus-grip on her leg. I checked off Arrow Thompson from the list. Alison hugged a little girl named Coco and another called Sparrow. Check, check. There were some normal ones too—Ethan, Riley, Sam, Anna. I watched with interest as a little boy walked into the classroom, leading two women by the finger. They stopped just inside the door and hugged him, then straightened to say a few words to him that were too low for me to hear.
When I realized that one woman had a proprietary arm around the other, I looked up with interest to see how Alison would react to what was obviously a lesbian couple. It wasn’t as if me living with Laurie was actually me living with Laurie, but I realized that it could be construed that way, especially the way the lines had been blurring in our somewhat undefined relationship. So it was important for me to know if it was something I needed to keep close to the vest.
Alison stood up and walked over to the couple. “This must be Zane?” she asked, stooping slightly. I wasn’t sure how she could’ve possibly identified the child, unless she had been pre-warned that Zane had two mommies. I wasn’t sure how I felt about the administration seeing the need to prep
